I don't fight in SCA, though I know people who have. I practice and teach martial arts to men and to women. I very much appreciate this list, I'm sure it will help me training women, and a few men, who definitely can have issues with 3 and 4. I know I had issues with 3.

This is a great site, and a wonderful article. For any ladies out there who want to do SCA fighting but are having trouble with some of these issues, I will reccomend enrolling in a martial arts class. I personally did some ametur boxing before I tried SCA fighting, and can tell you that it has helped me integrate into this world of SCA heavy fighting much easier than i would have before my boxing training.

I'm flabbergasted that someone pegged this so well. My bf sent this to me since he is a fighter. Although I have fought once when he first introduced me, I have not fought since - probably because I recognized all these obstacles and simply did not want to get hurt by them or work through them. This explanation is so on. I would particularly be hit hard with #4. I KNOW this and reading it made me realize how true it was and I would fall victim to it and it would be unavoidable. This article may make me decide to try fighting again - but it's true, I have the nurtue characteristic and also find myself not wanting to fight cross gender and not wanting to get hurt or look like a fool. So, wow. Thanks for this article because it will teach alot of us not only how to cope with this but that it exists and that it's not just a (as Maria said) "personal weakness" of some sort.

Wow, I'm not learning to fight with a rapier, but all that I've read here is so true and so relevent. I thought my hesitancy in fighting was more a personal weakness, but now I see that it's my bossy lizard brain. I can try and get around these hurdles now, thanks.
